Sodium Methoxide

 Production Method of Sodium Methoxide

Sodium Methoxide (NaOCH₃) is produced using caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH). This
method is especially common in industries looking to reduce costs and avoid the hazards
associated with metallic sodium.

Main Reaction

In this method, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) reacts with methanol (CH₃OH) as
follows:NaOH+CH3OH→CH3ONa+H2O
In this reaction, sodium methoxide (CH₃ONa) and water (H₂O) are produced.

Purification and Water Removal

The water produced in this reaction must be removed, as sodium methoxide rapidly decomposes in the presence of water. This is done through distillation or vacuum drying to obtain a dry, pure product.

Chemical Name: Sodium Methoxide

Chemical Formula: CHONa

CAS Number: 124-41-4

 Forms of Production

Sodium methoxide is available in two forms:

White Powder: For specific applications like pharmaceuticals and chemical production.

Liquid (solution in methanol): Easier to transport and used in larger industries,

especially in biodiesel production. This aligns with what is mentioned in the documents and is supported by scientific resources.

 Transportation

Liquid Type

Transportation: The sodium methoxide solution is primarily transported in tankers, drums, and Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC). This method is chosen due to the hazards associated with its severe reactivity with water and moisture.

Storage: The solution must be stored in sealed, dry containers, as contact with moisture can lead to decomposition and the production of hazardous substances.

Powder Type

Transportation: Sodium methoxide powder is transported in moisture-resistant, sealed packaging to prevent moisture and contamination. Typical packaging includes special bags placed inside metal drums.

Storage: Like the liquid form, the powder must be stored in a dry environment, away from moisture, as it also reacts with moisture and can decompose.

 Applications

Sodium methoxide is used in various industries:

Biodiesel

As the main catalyst in the transesterification reaction, converting vegetable oils and fats into biodiesel. This is its largest global application.

Pharmaceuticals

Especially in the synthesis of specific drugs such as antivirals and anticancer agents.

● Chemical Industry

For synthesizing esters, ethers, and as a strong base in chemical reactions.

Soaps and Detergents

As a catalyst in the saponification process. These applications align with information from scientific resources and global markets.
